An amazing shoot with the incredibly beautiful Chelsea. After a few months of trying to coordinate our schedules, a late date in January was set. I really wasn’t sure we were going to be able to knock out a shoot with me leaving for New York Fashion Week and Europe in early February and Chelsea moving to Dallas. Our fabulous stylist Jessica Kay Rowe was also busy with her own wedding so you can just imagine.

On-board for hair was the one and only Dennis Clendennen and makeup was provided by no other than Sara Eudy. With Chelsea moving and all, I wanted to knock out a few different looks. For the first few looks, Jessica put together a sweet collection which was not only sassy but quite elegant. For the last three looks we borrowed amazing wardrobe from Chloe Dao’s Spring 2012 Collection. Luckily I was able to get in my favorite piece before the rain hit which was a chiffon dress with a super cool print that just had to be shot outdoors. I think it made for the perfect sophisticated yet soft shot.

Hair: Dennis Clendenned and team Dionysus
Makeup: Sara Eudy
Styling: Jessica Kay Rowe
Model: Chelsea
Wardrobe: Jessica Kay Rowe and Chloe Dao

A month into the year and things are in full swing. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to kick off the year. Early goals being met, showing at Houston Press Artopia for the 3rd straight year, new clients and some great campaign work with Charming Charlie. This blog post is going to serve many purposes though. First and foremost I want to let you know what I have planned this year in the way of cool projects, exhibits, big shoots, etc… The second and more importantly is how you can support my causes as a artist/fashion photographer, etc… These projects ARE NOT possible without your support.

For those of you who know me, well you know how passionate I am about my photography. For those of you who don’t, you will soon find out. My goal has never and will never be short of becoming a great photographer. To improve my craft, capture more magical images and also have the ability to give back in some way. I have been very fortunate to work with some great people in my career and I will always be grateful. I also think it’s very important to give back to the arts, your community, charitable organizations, good causes, etc…

With this being said, I think it’s important for me to let everyone know how they can contribute, support and help out so that I can continue doing what I love and have the ability to give back as well. Next week I’ll be in New York covering Fashion Week and then headed directly to the UK for London Fashion Week. After London, I’ll be headed to Paris with the goal of meeting with the Jean Paul Gaultier team to discuss some upcoming projects we discussed in Dallas. From Paris it will be off to Milan to meet with some agencies and a PR firm to discuss possible future collaborations. Whilst in Europe and traveling in general, I’m going to make sure to interview and capture some great images for my book project “Reflection” and “Dreams”. Talking about that, stay tuned for more information regarding this uber cool project which slogan is “A Search and Discovery of the Human Spirit”.

NOTICE: Looking for couches to surf during my European travels. Please feel free to view my CouchSurfing.org profile HERE.

After this, it’s back to the Lonestar State for current projects, client shoots, campaigns or whatever other photography jobs I have. As I’ve said many times, “I’m a photographer, a good photographer, and available for hire”. This doesn’t ring any truer right now and everything you see above wouldn’t be possible without hard work, dedication and a love for what you’re doing. Do I shoot family photos? Yes. Can I take rocking photos of your pet Chihuahua? Hell yeah! Can I knock out some amazing wedding photos? Of course. Are you a designer and need someone to shoot your runway or fashion presentation? You seriously don’t need to look any further. Do you see what I’m getting at? While I love shooting fashion, editorials and runway photography, as a freelance photographer I do have to work hard to make a living. Sometimes the glitz and glamor, perception or just the outside appearance of people in the Fashion Industry make it seem as though we’re totally set, financially secure, etc… but I want you to know of all the hard work required behind the scenes to make it happen.

I’m a very versatile photographer, have a gift for capturing images so my take is this, anywhere there is a need for great photography, Jay Marroquin can be there with his camera. But before that happens, I need your support. Please see below for ways to support, spread the word about me, my projects and continue to make it possible for me to share my experiences with you.

Yours truly and grateful,
Jay Marroquin

UPDATE: 1/20/2012

Hi everyone!

A big hurrah to you!!!!! We’ve won for now — SOPA and PIPA were dropped by Congress today — the votes we’ve been scrambling to mobilize against have been cancelled.

The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game.  You were heard.

On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday.  See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.

This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.
The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled.  “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”

“’This is altogether a new effect,’ Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing ‘an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically’ in the last four decades, he added.”

Tweet with us, shout on the internet with us, let’s celebrate: Round of applause to the 13 million people who stood up  - #PIPA and #SOPA are tabled 4 now. #13millionapplause

ORIGINAL POST:

Today was nuts, right?

Google launched a petition.  Wikipedia voted to shut itself off.  Senators’ websites went down just from the sheer surge of voters trying to write them.   NYC and SF geeks had protests that packed city blocks.

You made history today: nothing like this has ever happened before.  Tech companies and users teamed up.  Tens of millions of people who make the internet what it is joined together to defend their freedoms.  The free network defended itself.  Whatever you call it, the bottom line is clear: from today forward, it will be much harder to mess up the internet.

The really crazy part?  We might even win.

Approaching Monday’s crucial Senate vote there are now 35 Senators publicly opposing PIPA.  Last week there were 5.   And it just takes just 41 solid “no” votes to permanently stall PIPA (and SOPA) in the Senate.  What seemed like miles away a few weeks ago is now within reach.

But don’t trust predictions.  The forces behind SOPA & PIPA (mostly movie companies) can make small changes to these bills until they know they have the votes to pass.  Members of Congress know SOPA & PIPA are unpopular, but they don’t understand why–so they’re easily duped by superficial changes.  The Senate returns next week, and the next few days are critical.  Here are two things to think about:

1. Plan on calling your Senator every day next week.  Pick up the phone each morning and call your Senators’ offices, until they vote “no” on cloture.  If your site participated today, consider running a “Call the Senate” link all next week.

2. Tomorrow, drop in at your Senators’ district offices.  We don’t have a cool map widget to show you the offices nearest you (we’re too exhausted! any takers?).  So do it the old fashioned way: use Google, or the phonebook to find the address, and just walk in, say you oppose PIPA, and urge the Senator to vote “no” on cloture.  These drop-in visits make our spectacular online protests more tangible and credible.

That’s it for now. Be proud and stay on it!

P.S. Huge credit goes to participants in the 11/16 American Censorship Day protest: Mozilla, 4chan, BoingBoing, Tumblr, TGWTG, and thousands of others.  That’s what got this ball rolling!  Reddit, both the community and the team behind it, you’re amazing.  And of course, thanks to the Wikimedians whose patient and inexorable pursuit of the right answer brought them to take world-changing action. Thanks to David S, David K, Cory D, and E Stark for bold action at critical times.

P.P.S. If you haven’t already, show this video to as many people as you can. It works! http://fightforthefuture.org/pipa/ – Embedded below.

So a few weeks ago I was asked if I was going to exhibit at Houston Press Artopia. For the first time the answer wasn’t a quick yes. I LOVE Houston Press Artopia and still think it’s one of the best art shindigs in the Bayou City. But a busy schedule which includes Fashion Weeks in New York and London followed by some fashion shoots/scouting/meetings in Paris and Milan from the first of February thru mid-March I really didn’t know if I could pull it off.

I did know that if I showed I wanted to showcase my fashion photography for the first time and not some controversial, politically themed or RAW type exhibit. In the middle of the night when least expected the creative process decided to kick in to full gear. The next thing you know I’m emailing peeps, calling my printer, etc.. I asked my good friend Dennis Clendennen from Dionysus if he was interested in collaborating. I’m stoked he said yes and can’t wait. We’re going to have some sick stuff on display. Also excited to be showing for the 3rd straight year.

To state that I’ve captured someone’s seductive side means they must have another side. Yet the antonym for seductive has no relevance here. For Erin is one of those once in a life time free spirits that’s always smiling, joking and can brighten up any room she walks in to. To say I enjoy not only shooting Erin but being able to consider her a friend is an understatement. She’s an extremely talented and beautiful model and I wanted to showcase her seductive side.

I’ve received many compliments on some of the latest photos I’ve either posted on my blog or Facebook. I think it’s important to state that while a model may have incredible looks, those looks should be paired with an equally talented photographer to bring out the best qualities in the model. A seasoned photographer can not only push a model, but teach what it takes to knock out great expressions, looks or even walk. This usually isn’t the case when shooting with a photographer of lesser experience.

I’m a photographer, a good photographer and I’m available for hire. So if you’re a new talent out there and needing shots for a comp card or your port, hit me up. Your photos reflect you as a model and remember, a good photographer can improve your value. My rates are also very affordable so just feel free to ask.

Not only does lovely Neal Hamil model Sarah Bindhammer Prudhomme rock the camera, she has a kickass rockstar name! Sarah and myself met for coffee a bit before the holidays to discuss her shoot and to see when we could schedule it. Well with hair guru Dennis heading out on vacation right after Christmas I wasn’t sure when we would get it in.

Luckily for us, Dennis would be staying in town a few days. We managed to get everyone together to shoot the day after Christmas. Seems like all the fun and magic of Christmas wasn’t all gone after all.

A juxtaposition of elegance and edge is how designer Natalie Harris describes her Damsel White Label. A designer I’ve known for a few months now and have been looking forward to working with. When Natalie sent me a message asking if I could do a last minute shoot for her I gladly agreed. First off, I think she’s a talented designer and secondly, she’s a way cool girl with a vision.

We met for a quick coffee and she explained how she just needed a few quick shots for PR reasons and a date was set. Now I just needed to line up a team for the shoot. I mean, we can’t do a shoot without kickass hair and makeup right? Even if just for a few needed shots. First call I made was to my trusty hair genius Dennis and he was down. Secondly I lined up a model that we felt would rock this shoot. I called my friend Brandy since she had the look Natalie was going for. When it came down to makeup I was excited when Marc Harvey offered to help out since we had never worked together but I had always admired his work.

As always, the team did an incredible job and I love our quick shots. Really can’t wait to work with Natalie and really put together a photoshoot so stay tuned for that.

Strength & Courage – A blog post in the writing about a 12 year old boy battling Cancer since the age of 5.

It’s been hard to write this blog post…for many reasons I suppose. I find myself staring at a blank screen trying to find the words to explain my experience with Eli. To have so many things put in perspective in the span of a few hours by a child who has unknowingly endured more in 7 years than most grown men. Whose family has made countless sacrifices to ensure that their baby boy can have the possible care.  And that even though you know there’s been a plethora of pain and suffering, there wasn’t a hint of melancholia behind his blue eyes.

Eli was diagnosed with Metastatic Epithelioid Sarcoma (a form of Cancer) in 2004, right around Christmas time. He was then 5 1/2 years old. Since then his family moved from Vegas to Houston. The move was made because Eli was responding to chemotherapy treatments being administered at M.D. Anderson and to be closer. His mom Rosa (a pediatric nurse) even got a job at M.D. Anderson working with inpatient children at the hospital. Dad, Michael, quit his job to take care of Eli at home, and also take him to required appointments and such. Eli also has a younger sister named Elysia. She’s 9 and with her older brother dealing with Cancer, you know she hasn’t had a normal childhood also. For the past 6 years Eli has been fighting non-stop. He’s had several surgeries to remove some of the tumors, several rounds of radiation (how Vita came to meet Eli) and the never ending courses of chemotherapy. This is Eli.

I’m thankful to my friend Vita for connecting us. Back in November she reached out and asked me if I would be interested in taking some family photos for a family in need and gave me some background information. At that exact moment I knew what kind of photos I wanted to take. I didn’t want a staged shoot or some family photos taken in studio. I wanted to capture Eli and his family being just that, a family. I believe a photo should capture a moment or freeze a memory in time. I asked if they enjoyed the zoo and they said yes. This is how our location came to being. I got great enjoyment from shooting Eli and his family and happy that for a brief moment in time, they could take their mind off of the struggles they face daily and enjoy a day at the zoo. I’d like to also thank Frank who sponsored the shoot.

This is a post about strength and courage. This is a post about an incredible 12 year old boy, and what he teach you. Was this Eli’s intention? I highly doubt it, but then again this is the beauty of life and learning it’s lessons. So maybe you’ve had your heart broken, didn’t get the promotion you wanted, or perhaps your favorite sports team didn’t win the big game.

Be like Eli, raise your arms, unfold your wings and soar no matter what obstacles you may have to overcome.

Meet Eli..and family

11/11/11 and I find myself in Austin, TX getting ready to shoot a wedding. A departure from my fashion stuff, but pretty is pretty right?! Well it is when it’s at the beautiful Mercury Hall in South Austin.

Layla had contacted me a few months prior asking me if I would be interested in their wedding after viewing a ad I had put out. To be exact, a marketing campaign focused on wedding and engagement photography in the Houston and Austin markets. Not my usual line of work but after some thought I decided to expand my photography services. I am after all a photographer and do have to pay my light bill. That and I honestly feel that the packages I have come up sit nicely in-between amateur or so called photographers on Craigslist, and your really experienced professional wedding photographers that can really get quite pricey.

We discussed the details of the wedding, the date, my photography style, etc…and we really clicked. Layla liked my style and her wedding sounded like the perfect fit for me. A date was set and the rest is history. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and a total blast to shoot. Even if the sun was going down and I was shooting all natural light. I mean, what would a photo gig be without some sort of challenge. 2 words kiddos – FAST PRIMES. I would like to thank Layla and Huston once again for trusting me with their very special date. I hope my photos bring back the great memories countless times.

So yeah, if you need a wedding or engagement photographer, hire me. A fashion photographer who can rock wedding/engagement photos!

An old MUSE cover shot served as inspiration for this rocking shoot with model Phoenix. Well the initial inspiration came way via Dennis and was focused on the hair. That’s what I love about working with Dennis, he’s always thinking of something new, fresh and willing to push the envelope.

Later when Phoenix and I met and to discuss ideas, she showed me some of her inspiration shots. Immediately I knew some of her shots would work perfectly with what Dennis wanted to do and a date was set. A few days later Terri Clendennen was knocking out killer makeup and Dennis working his magic on the hair. I decided to process the photos two different ways and what you see here posted has a bit more of a vintage film look to it.
